happy Mother's Day
Unlike other special days that are celebrated, Mother's Day, has no particular theme, there are no taglines, no context. The idea is to just celebrate and acknowledge the idea of motherhood.
Someone very rightly told me that being a mother is not just being a biological mother. Mother means love and care- which can come much before you have your own child- it is what as an elder sibling you have for those younger than you, as a senior in school for newcomers, as a team leader you have for your team.
When a woman becomes a mother, world changes- the child becomes the epicenter of her existence. Some mothers leave cities, homes, jobs, careers for their children. How beautiful the emotion is . However is mother only synonymous with sacrifice. Well not necessarily.
Mothers are called “superheroes “ if she sacrifices her well-being for her children. No this cannot be a norm.
I feel how much you love your child cannot be directly proportional to how much you have ignored your needs, your aspirations, your career, your life.
Mothers who have careers, who try to manage work, home and children don’t love their children any less.
The mother who leaves home early in the morning leaving behind a young child to work as a daily wager does it for the child- to make sure her child’s needs are fulfilled. Even otherwise if a woman has no financial constraints and makes a career while being a mother, doesn’t mean her child is not important for her.
As a mother and also as someone’s daughter, I don’t think parenting is helicoptering. Parenting is spending quality time, caring, loving your child while also living your own life.
We as a society have to also lift this extremely patriarchal burden from the mother. She needs freedom from this expectation.
Not just the society, employers have to realise, motherhood doesn’t paralyze a woman, it gives her wings. Her capacity as a worker isn’t compromised, her mind is as sharp as before.
Motherhood balances, calms, nurtures a woman, infact completes her .
