Banning any movie Kerala Story included is counter productive and against free speech.
The Kerala Story might be having all the problems in the world. But the regulator, in this case, the Censor Board as well as the courts in the country, haven't stopped it's release.
The bone of contention was how many girls from Kerala got converted to Islam in the name of love jihad and taken to various places to join the brutal Islamic State terrorists.
The trailer of the movie said 32, 000 then they changed those numbers.
Every movie is a work of art. Should be. Then the creators are entitled for their own freedom. No movie is a truthful documentary. Even truth has so many versions, depending on the narrative and the narrator.
So why the hell a movie has to conform to the absolute truth of some people. If you want to watch it, watch it. Else don't watch it.
A movie spoiling communal harmony is sheer bumkum. There are so many movies that depicted some religion in bad light. Bad light I mean as seen by some people.
The men and women on the streets or wherever they are cannot appropriate for themselves what should be shown in the theaters. That way, nothing will be shown in theatres. Anyone can hurt anyone's sensibilities. As long as the institutional watchdogs approve of a movie, it should be made available for public.
Along with Kerala story there's another movie showing in theatres, 2018
That movie shows the resilience of the people in the state in overcoming a flood. For many people, the movie also shows a particular party as the saviour of the masses. Some people argue that's not fair because any government is expected to do the same and the ruling party shouldn't be clapped for doing what it should have done anyway.
The point here is very simple. A movie is not a gospel truth..nor should a work of art should be. Banning anything is an act of intolerance. It can't be the case that tolerance is selective. Tolerance is universal. So banning A Kerala Story is not something we must cheer for.
