It's difficult to shake off cultural and religious myths. Even medicine was not immune from biases against women for a very long time.
Over time, I've realised that it's not only me, but a lot of women out there who faced and are still facing all this shit. Separated from their families at "that time of the month", kept away from kitchen, not allowed to touch holy things because they are "impure", considered "filthy","sinful","unclean" and what not. And all this is not what happened a hundred years ago but today.
This whole thing not only makes us women, more vulnerable to our periods but also makes us more ashamed and tired of our womanhood. This makes us feel like an alien, more of a disease than a human. And what is our mistake? Is it just that, we bleed? And above all why are women kept away from temples during their periods? Because they are impure?... The goddesses that you pray also bleed, why not keep them out of your temples and holy places when they do so? In place of praising women and considering them so powerful that they can work and behave as if nothing's happened inspite of all the pain periods bring in, people exclude them.
According to me, this practice of exclusion and shame might be because of two reasons. The first being the lack of knowledge. Second, the absence of talking. And I believe that it's not that difficult to improve the ways people feel about periods.
PERIODS ARE NOT BAD. It's just another natural process and we cannot do anything about it. What we can do is stop period shaming, stop making women feel uncomfortable about it, stop avoiding it, stop creating and supporting unnecessary taboos and above all, stop being ashamed of it. Women are very strong and periods are just a proof to this. Women during periods should be taken care of and treated equal. Because IT'S NOT WRONG. Every women bleeds. And this does not make them different. This just makes them who they are. And that's what matters the most :)
