Pakistan Selects Pace-Heavy Squad for T20 World Cup, Babar Azam to Lead
Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has finalized a pace-heavy 15-member squad for the upcoming T20 World Cup, with Babar Azam retaining his role as captain. The squad, announced just before the ICC deadline, features five specialist fast bowlers, including the inclusion of Abbas Afridi. Imad Wasim provides the left-arm spin option, while Abrar Ahmed is the sole specialist legspinner in the squad.
The selection panel opted to stick with the touring party that recently competed in T20Is against Ireland and England, omitting players like Hasan Ali, Irfan Khan, and Agha Salman. Despite initial conflicts regarding due process, the final squad has been endorsed by the PCB selection committee.
In a statement attributed to the selection committee, the squad was described as "extremely talented and balanced," combining youth and experience. Notably, Haris Rauf, who missed recent matches due to injury, is expected to play a crucial role alongside other strike bowlers in the tournament.
The squad's announcement followed a series of discussions and revisions, with the PCB ensuring adherence to proper selection protocols. Pakistan, the last team to finalize their squad, will begin their T20 World Cup campaign against USA in Dallas on June 6, followed by matches against India, Canada, and Ireland.
Babar Azam's leadership will be tested in the pace-friendly conditions of the USA and the Caribbean, as Pakistan aims for success in the prestigious tournament.
