How many Covid cases does India have?
Officially: 14 million.
Realistically: 400 million.
A serological survey in August and September 2020, which measured the presence of the virus in a sample group of the population, estimated that there were between 26 and 32 infections for every reported case of the virus.
That puts the undercount at around 30-fold; ie, for every 30 infections, only one is being picked up as a case.
There is no evidence that the number has changed significantly by now.
By that math, the real number of Covid infections are more than 400 million. That's more than the entire population of the United States!
US has over 31 million cases. India's official number is lower, but official numbers in India only tell part of the story.
