If there's one club, it is indeed Arsenal, the one whose recent record you might not believe because of its clean triangles and lovely flower arrangements.
Last season, Arsenal missed out on a top-four finish by two points, squandering a strong position going into the final stretch of the season. But after the season was over, Bukayo Saka was named Arsenal's player of the year for the second consecutive year. In the Premier League, he had a direct role in 18 goals. There was nothing to complain about.
It is easy to see why Mikel Arteta relied on Saka so heavily given the performances of his teammates last season, even if Saka was absent from all of preseason due to Euro 2020. Only two more league goals than Saka alone achieved last season were scored by Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Alexandre Lacazette, and Eddie Nketiah. Saka tied Lacazette for most assists and was Arsenal's best scorer in the league (7).
In the summer, Arsenal released Lacazette and acquired Gabriel Jesus from Manchester City. Jesus has now scored five more goals in eight Premier League matches this year than Lacazette did in his 30 matches in 2020/21. (4). Jesus has helped Arsenal immensely, and not simply because of the influence he' having on goals scored.
Another possibility for Arsenal was Gabriel Martinelli. Last season, the Brazilian winger personally assisted on 12 league goals; however, it is fair to say that his full impact wasn't yet felt. Last season, he only made 21 league starts. This season, the 21-year-old has featured in each of Arsenal's nine games and has personally assisted on four goals.
Along with getting along well with Jesus, Martinelli is also finding it simpler to find space on his side thanks to Granit Xhaka and Oleksandr Zinchenko two other summer additions from City who have taken up new advanced positions. The responsibilities for Arsenal have changed, but the team's basic shape hasn't. They often play with a more conventional style, remaining wide and moving down the sides to generate opportunities. Zinchenko will go inside, aiding Arsenal in overloading the midfield to give Xhaka the freedom to advance and join the assault.
