Arriving to the Pre-Season Overweight? Here's Why PSG Sold Marco Verratti...
Former Paris Saint-Germain midfielder and Italy international Marco Verratti, aged 30, reportedly arrived at PSG's pre-season overweight as per L'Equipe and this was one of the chief reasons why he was sold by the club.
According to the report, the situation surrounding Verratti became a focal point of discussions between the newly-appointed coach Luis Enrique and the club's leadership, including Sporting advisor Luís Campos and club president Nasser Al Khelaifi. Luis Enrique, who had expressed initial interest in retaining Verratti due to his technical prowess and ability to resist pressure in midfield, gradually came to the conclusion that the Italian's wages did not align with his on-field performance.
Furthermore, Luis Enrique received warnings about Verratti's lifestyle, with concerns that his behavior could negatively influence his teammates – a line that the coach was not willing to tolerate. The tipping point for Luis Enrique came when Verratti reported for pre-season training overweight.
Following this incident, Verratti's time at PSG came to an end. The Italian midfielder was part of PSG's pre-season tour in Asia but was eventually informed by Luis Enrique and Campos to seek a new club. Verratti subsequently joined Qatar Stars League side Al-Arabi after spending eleven seasons with PSG.
