"You can't make Messi angry," Juan Roman Riquelme
Lionel Messi and Argentina claimed the FIFA World Cup title in Qatar last month. Needless to say there were a couple of huge obstacles on their way to the title, which includes their dramatic final against France. Their quarterfinal victory over Netherlands was probably the defining moment of their campaign.
Lionel Messi had same altercation with the Dutch camp during their tense battle. Juan Roman Riquelme believes that the Netherlands manager, Louis Van Gaal made a huge mistake in speaking out against Lionel Messi before the match up. The Argentine answered in style, scoring a goal and assisting another.
“I think Van Gaal had [mentioned Messi before the match]," Riquelme told TyC Sports. "There are things that cannot happen in football. You can't make him angry. It is preferable to hug him, kiss him, so that he does not want to beat you."
"When the best player gets angry, you don't have a chance to beat him. It is impossible. That's why Van Gaal's declaration for Argentina was very good [for us]. In addition, Messi has an advantage because, when he gets angry, he doesn't get sent off like other players," he added.
Netherlands forced the game into extra time, after being 2-0 down at one point in time. However, just like their 2014 World Cup semifinal battle, Argentina held their nerves in the penalty shootout to progress further.
