Who is Arsenal and Dortmund target Ivan Fresneda?
According to reliable journalist David Ornstein, Real Valladolid's right-back Ivan Fresneda has reached consensus with both Arsenal and Borussia Dortmund and will now have to choose between the two.
Only 18, this is Fresneda's first proper season in men's football. Even then teams are ready to pay in the range of 20-30 million for him. This is because he has all the qualities required to be a modern fullback and with him, a team could potentially lock up that spot for more than a decade.
The latest trend in football sees fullbacks with skillsets of midfielders. Examples include Zinchenko at Arsenal and the newly emerging Rico Lewis at Manchester City. Fresneda is another of this prototype. He is extremely comfortable in possession and has the calmness to play his way out of trouble. He is capable of underlapping and overlapping which is a very good asset to have in a ball dominant side.
Unlike a lot of other teenagers bursting into the scene, Fresneda has the body of a fully grown man. He is muscular and has long legs. This means he is capable of combating physically with wingers and this helps a lot. His defensive numbers are actually quite notable. 3.39 tackles, 1.52 interceptions and 3.16 clearances per 90 paint a rosy picture but it is important to note that the sample size is quite small.
His attacking traits are also good but they are extremely underutilised because Real Valladolid aren't particular good going forward.
Although it is easy to get carried away by his hype it is important to remember that he is still very young and raw with barely any big league experience. If he goes to Arsenal, he will almost certainly not play much immediately. But the potential upside is huge. This is why it's even more perplexing that both the Spanish giants Real Madrid and Barcelona, who very clearly need RBs haven't gone for him.
