Undoubtedly, 100 (MLD) sewer waste is going directly into Ganga at Varanasi through Varuna and Asi rivers. 33 MLD is contributed by Asi, 37 by Varuna river and 30 MLD is contributed by other parts of the city. Varuna Corridor commuters are also facing problems.Despite complaints from people passing through the sewer, no action was taken by the authorities. In the report sent earlier, it has been said that currently partial or untreated water is being discharged into Varuna from 15 drains. Even in Asi, untreated waste water is being released daily. No information has been given regarding demarcation.Varuna Corridor was built with Rs 201 crore. Along with greening the seven km area, sewer pipelines have been laid on both the banks. These were connected to the Goithahan STP so that the sewer could not directly flow into the Ganga through Varuna. Apart from the hotels built on the banks of Varuna, sewerage is coming from other buildings.Chambers and pipelines have been broken at many places. Due to which the sewer is overflowing and going into Varuna. The foundation stone of a new STP of 55 MLD has been laid in Bhagwanpur. With its help, the sewer going into Asi can be cleaned and sent. A new STP will be built in Lohta at a cost of Rs 348 crore.
It will do a great job of treating sewerage through Varuna going into Ganga with 55 MLD treatment capacity. To tap both, a 5 MLD STP is proposed at Sujabad at a cost of Rs 198 crore. Varuna River, which originates from Malhan Lake near Phulpur in Prayagraj and joins the Ganga in Varanasi, has no water left at its source. Asi river had almost ceased to exist. The existence of Varuna river is also in danger due to the indifference of the administration. The plan was made to free the Varuna River from sewerage and green its banks. But, these plans could not come to fruition. The construction done here is also deteriorating now. Even interlockings at many places have caved in.
