Water buffaloes are large, and are often hunted by lions in pride. But how does that make them respond? Is there a defense mechanism these big buffaloes have formed?
In order to dodge their brutally sharp horns, lions take advantage of the enormous herds that these animals roam in and attack from behind. When the herd runs, lionesses will either surprise the buffalo or kill the weakest and slowest members, but these same herd strategies can be fatal to lions.
Several buffalo herds use "mobbing" techniques to drive away or even kill lions that dare to attack them by using their vast numbers as a weapon. In addition, water buffalo represent a proactive threat since they are known to hunt down lion cubs and trample them to death before they can mature and endanger the water buffalo herd as grown ups. So water buffaloes do choose the mass murder technique to protect their herd.
