Being heavily dependent on monsoon to irrigate the crops does not provide a sustainable model for agriculture. Especially because rainfall is becoming increasingly erratic year by year (which is a problem in itself). Sometimes there's too less rainfall and sometimes there's too much; and having the farmer depend on that wanton monsoons might just lead to food shortage and scrapping of livelihoods.
However, change must be brought in a cautious manner. One cannot revamp the entire agriculture industry in a jiffy. Rather, it is something that requires extensive study and planning, so that change is brought about in the right direction, keeping in mind long-term benefits. Being a sector that's most closely connected to nature, our change should align with nature's principles so as to make it sustainable in the long run. After all, what we need isn't rice to last us just this season; rather, a cooperation between Man and Nature to last us generations.
