On the night of the 95th Academy Awards, India made history as
The Elephant Whisperers, directed by Kartiki Gonsalves and produced by Guneet Monga, won Best Documentary Short Subject. After The House That Ananda Built in 1969 and An Encounter With Faces, which competed for Best Documentary Short in 1979, The Elephant Whisperers was the third film in the same category from India to receive an Oscar nomination. And being the first Indian film to win in this field, The Elephant Whisperers made history.
Kartiki Gonsalves, the film's director, and producer Guneet Monga took the stage to accept the prize. Kartiki gave a moving speech to thank the Academy for accepting their film.
Priyanka Chopra cheered for the win and congratulated both Monga and Gonslaves for the win on her Instagram.
Set in the Mudumalai National Park, The Elephant Whisperers centers on an orphaned elephant calf named Raghu who is being taken care of by an indigenous couple called Bomman and Belli. The movie was available on Netflix in December 2022.
The other nominees in the Documentary Short Film Category were Haul Out, How Do You Measure A Year, The Martha Mitchell Effect, and Stranger At The Gate.
