With her story of harassment by big time Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein, the reporter who has been pursuing the story breaks down.
The newsroom knows this would authenticate months of hard work two New York Times journalist had put into it.
The movie highlights the struggle, hard work and conviction of
Jodi Kantor and Megan Twohey, the Pulitzer Prize-winning reporters who broke the story of the Weinstein sexual misconduct allegations and harassment of not only actresses but also his staff.
New York Times broke the story in 2017 and Weinstein has been serving 23 years jail sentence since 2021.
It was this case where 80 women including top actors like Judd testified against Weinstein’s conduct . The case which ignited the #metoo movement against perpetrators across the world and led to reforms in laws for working women in offices and other industries .
Oscar winners Angelina Jolie, Gwyneth Paltrow, Lupita Nyong'o and Mira Sorvino claimed that they rebuffed Weinstein's unwanted advances. Other women have alleged sexual harassment, sexual assault and rape.
The movie highlights the Herculean task breaking the story was for the two female reporters . Who travelled across countries and contented to get women to talk about their harassment .
Weinstein resorted to threats, intimidation and even bullying to stop the article from
Publishing . However New York Times convinced that Weinstein was involved and has even tried to shut women up with settlements, stood behind their reporters.
In one of the scenes Kantor tells a fellow reporter how Weinstein team actually tried to approach her using their common Jewish connection . They wanted to talks “Jew to Jew”.
In the movie, Kantor gets the feeling a black van with blacked-out windows is following her down a dark street. As she looks back at it, it speeds up to go past her.
In fact, Weinstein had used two covert surveillance companies to keep tabs on the reporters doing the story.
