The Congress high command is considering reinstating Sachin Pilot as the party president in Rajasthan, a post he held till July 2020 when he led a revolt against Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot.
He was then sacked as the Deputy Chief Minister as well as the Rajasthan Congress President.
Pilot managed to garner the support of 18 legislators but failed to bring down the Gehlot government.
After hectic negotiations, the Congress leadership persuaded Pilot to abandon his plan to jump the ship with the promise that all his genuine concerns will be addressed.
Accordingly, a panel was formed to look into the demands put forth by Pilot and his camp.
However, the panel was virtually disbanded following the death of Congress party's master strategist Ahmed Patel in November last year.
Since then, Pilot has approached the Congress high command a few times with his list of demands.
The Congress leadership is keen to rehabilitate Pilot given that he had played a key role In ensuring the party's return to power in Rajasthan.
Offering him the Rajasthan Congress Chief's post is one of the options with the condition that he would be projected as the party's Chief Ministerial face ahead of the 2023 assembly elections.
So far, Gehlot has never been able to retain power as the Chief Minister. The Congress lost power to the BJP during his precious two terms - 1998-2003 and 2008-2013.
He is currently in his third term - December 2018 onwards.
The move to reinstate Pilot is expected to face some resistance by the Gehlot camp.
But by forcibly dethroning Captain Amarinder Singh as the Punjab Chief Minister, the Congress leadership appears to be determined to ensure its writ runs large given that it had been repeatedly described as weak and accused of being status-quoist.
Pilot is keen to become the Chief Minister in this term only, and his camp has argued that if that happens the Congress would be able to beat the anti-incumbency and might even retain power with the BJP facing massive infighting.
A cabinet reshuffle is also expected with present state unit chief Govind Singh Dotasra likely going back to the government.
