The buzz that Congress Chief Ministers of Rajasthan (Ashok Gehlot) and Chhattisgarh (Bhupesh Baghel) are going to be replaced is growing louder in the political circles following the ouster of Captain Amarinder Singh as the Punjab Chief Minister.
While Dalit leader replaced Captain Amarinder Singh as the Punjab Chief Minister, there is much speculation about TS Singhdeo and Sachin Pilot being the next Chief Ministers of Chhattisgarh and Rajasthan respectively.
It is matter of time when both the states will see a change of guard given that the Congress high command has decided to change th incumbent Chief Ministers to beat the anti-incumbency ahead of the 2023 assembly elections in both Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh.
A formula is being worked out in Rajasthan according to which not Pilot but assembly Speaker CP Joshi could replace Gehlot.
Joshi, a former Union Minister and a Congress general secretary, is considered close to former Congress President Rahul Gandhi.
Joshi, a Brahmin leader, lost a chance to be the Rajasthan Chief Minister was in 2008 when he lost the assembly elections from Nathdwara constituency by just one vote.
He then won the 2009 Lok Sabha elections from Bhilwara and was inducted into the Union Cabinet headed by the then Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.
From 2009 to 2013, he held the portfolios of Rural Development, Railways and Road Transport and Highways ministries.
Subsequently, Joshi was brought to the party and appointed as a general secretary in-charge of Bihar, Assam and other Northeastern states.
In 2018, he successfully contested the assembly elections from Nathdwara and became the Assembly Speaker after the Congress regained power from the BJP.
The formula being worked out is that Joshi will replace Gehlot as the Chief Minister with Sachin Pilot taking over as the Rajasthan Congress President till the 2023 Assembly elections.
Gehlot is likely to be brought to the central level, also known as the All India Congress Committee (AICC), and given a significant position.
The party will go to next polls under the joint leadership of Joshi and Pilot who could become the next Chief Minister if the Congress retains power, which will be a first in many decades.
