Sudha Murthy, 73, the mother-in-law of UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, has been selected for a position in India's upper house of parliament. Married to NR Narayana Murthy, co-founder of Infosys, her daughter Akshata is married to Sunak, who assumed office in 2022.
Typically, members of India's upper house are elected, but 12 individuals, often distinguished achievers, are appointed by the president for a six-year term. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi hailed Murthy's nomination as an exemplification of "Nari Shakti" (women's power) and praised her significant contributions to various fields, including social work, philanthropy, and education.
Recognized with India's third-highest civilian honor, the "Padma Bhushan," last year, Murthy expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve her country. She affirmed her commitment to utilizing the parliamentary platform to address the needs of the people of India. Murthy's husband, Narayana Murthy, founded Infosys with a loan of $250 from her, transforming it into India's seventh-largest company and the first Indian firm listed on the New York Stock Exchange.
Amidst scrutiny of her finances, particularly her non-domicile tax status in the UK, Akshata Murthy, daughter of Sudha Murthy, announced her decision to pay UK taxes on her overseas income to avoid distracting from her husband's political career.
