On Super Tuesday, President Joe Biden swept every Democratic contest in the early results, including taking Minnesota, the home state of nearest challenger Dean Phillips.
But he didn’t reckon on the power of Jason Palmer in American Samoa.
According to a report in British Newspaper, the Guardian, Palmer, a Maryland resident, said he’d never visited the territory before the caucus, but had been “campaigning remotely, doing Zoom town halls, talking to people, listening to them about their concerns and what matters to them”.
Palmer qualified for the presidential ballot in 16 US states and territories and, at 52, has promoted himself as one of the youngest Democratic candidates.
According to campaign finance records, Palmer has loaned his campaign more than $500,000 of his own money.
Jason Michael Palmer is an entrepreneur. Palmer is the first challenger to an incumbent president to win a presidential primary contest since the Ted Kennedy 1980 presidential campaign.
According to a Wikimedia entry, Palmer was born in Aberdeen, Maryland on December 1, 1971. He graduated from the University of Virginia in 1994 and earned an M.B.A. from Harvard Business School in 1999.
Early in his career Palmer founded three technology and services companies. He then held executive positions at Microsoft Education and SchoolNet, later founded Kaplan's venture capital effort, and was deputy director for postsecondary education at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. In August 2017, Palmer appeared on author Wes Moore's Future City talk show on WYPR.
On January 18, 2024, Palmer gave an interview with Politico where he touted his status as the youngest Democratic presidential candidate, and one of the youngest candidates in either party, calling on Biden, and all elderly lawmakers, to "pass the torch" to younger generations. Palmer also promoted his management skills from his business career, stating that if elected, if he doesn't have considerable knowledge in a field, he would hire a skilled outsider. He also stated he would center his term in office promoting technological advancements.
American Samoa has been the site of quixotic victories before. During the 2020 Democratic primaries, billionaire Michael Bloomberg’s only win came in the territory.
