Poor things topped Oscars with so many awards and nominations, watched it- it’s absolutely well deserved
First thing first, the movie might startle you, some might find it too unsettling ( which was the case for me) others too explicit.
If you are fasting for Ramadhan or Lent watch it post breaking fast or like me fast forward-although I might just go back to it post Ramadhan.
One thing for sure the movie had to be explicit for that impact. Every time you become uncomfortable you know the movie has left its mark .
Poor things is a take on Frankestine , a humorous one and much deeper.
It is journey of a woman in Victorian London -who is bought to life by a brain surgeon after implanting her dying foetuses brain in her .
Directed by Yorgos Lanthimos and written by Tony McNamara, it is based on the 1992 novel by Alasdair Gray.
Emma Stone shines in her role so do others like Mark Raffalo, William Dafoe. Stone goes from being childlike woman who is fully grown in her body with uncensored monstrous carnal desires . She is exploited at you feel it’s child abuse, however what is a relief she doesn’t suffer. She is unapologetic about indulging in her desires and that’s what she wants until she sees death and drudgery from her ivory tower and it shakes her world.
The film leaves you thinking, asking questions about everything you have know in life. Everything you have seen or experienced as a woman .
Besides acting the movie is a visual treat with beautiful costumes and sets. You can see advancements in science which leave you will a feel of dystopia- like a hybrid pig and rooster, another woman again an experiment which seems to have gone wrong. Even Dafoe character has a look which is unsettling . There are flying carriages and steam engines .
The power of the film lies in its dialogue- the words are just philosophy
Catch the movie on Disney hotstar and brace up for an experience.
