In 2020, Oregon had the ludicrous idea that decriminalizing drugs would help with the drug use problems that were plaguing the state. However, 4 years later, we’re now finding out that not only did it not work, but that drug use and overdoses are up as a result.
In 2019, before the new law was adopted, 280 people died of overdoses in the state. In 2023, over 1,000 died of overdoses. So why isn’t the law working? It’s obvious, really. Because decriminalizing things doesn’t stop people from doing them, it emboldens them to engage in the activity more without penalty.
The law made it so criminal acts related to possession of drugs were replaced with a $100 fine and a rule that the fine would be dropped if the person underwent rehabilitation. Unbelievable. Now, liberal activist researchers are trying to prove that the deaths aren’t linked to the new law, even in the face of facts that show otherwise. You can’t make this stuff up.
