The more the things change the more they remain the same!
The Kalamandalam Sathyabhama controversy in Kerala exposes many hypocrites alongside her who adores white-skinned people. Jordan Peele’s racist film Get Out came to my mind. How well it interconnects people in any part of the globe with racist thoughts. In a hurry to thicken her views, Kalamandalam Sathyabhama throws more tantrums and doesn’t seem to be in a mood to apologize to Mohiniyattam artiste R.L.V. Ramakrishnan for her derogatory remarks about him. In a recent interview, Sathyabhama, a Mohiniyattam teacher opined Mohiniyattam performance is not meant for men, especially with no fancy looks and have the color of a crow. She further extended it would be unbearable even for their mothers. All of her speculations led to R.L.V. Ramakrishnan, (brother of late actor Kalabhavan Mani) a winner of the Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Akademi Award in Mohiniyattam, also holds a PhD in the art form. Ramakrishnan believes Kalamandalam Sathyabhama is not so comfortable with his achievements and she has insulted him before as well. Whatever, these were the worst ‘colored’ remarks I have come across in the field of art. She didn’t stop there. In Madam’s racist view, all kids with ‘dark skin or no glamour’ should be sent to the back bench. They should not attend competitions. I think she is stuck at Bramayugam (guys, watch it on SonyLiv). Some mental disorders are incurable. We can only sympathize. Empathy is out of the question. It’s clear from her senseless talks, she had targeted instant fame and public attention. She was that desperate, it appears mudslinging is her go-to ‘classy’ option. Kalamandalam Sathyabhama’s arrogance display is a pointer to all of us conditioned to pick ‘white’ over black.
