Neverkusen no more: New German champions crowned amidst crazy scenes

This year will be Bayer Leverkusen's 120th anniversary. That means for 119 years, they hadn't won a single league title, despite getting close multiple times. Fans had lost hope and rivals had dubbed them 'Neverkusen'.

But they are Neverkusen no more. On Sunday evening, Xabi Alonso and his team beat Werder Bremen 5-0 and were crowned Bundesliga champions for the first time ever.

The fans who had come to the ground invaded the pitch multiple times before the final whistle was blown. The scenes were extraordinary after the game ended. Fans poured on to the pitch while emotions poured out of the fans. The heroes, particularly Florian Wirtz, who scored a hattrick on the night were mobbed out of love. It was truly beautiful to watch and it was a reminder of what football really means to people.
