Over 70% of the two billion litres of water used daily for Bengaluru's 15 million residents come from the Cauvery River. The river has been at the focus of a water-sharing dispute with the adjoining state of Tamil Nadu for more than a century. The river starts in the state of Karnataka, the capital of which is Bengaluru.
However, last year's weak monsoon reduced groundwater levels, necessitating deeper borewell excavation in order to locate water. This has caused the water supply to go short by 200 million litres every day.
