Lionel Messi has survived the FIFA Disciplinary action. It has been understood that Messi will not the semifinals clash against Croatia. The Argentine skipper had disciplinary action ongoing for his criticism of the referee in the Netherlands game.
FIFA gave no timetable for verdicts, which have typically not been published before a team’s next game at this World Cup. Argentina faces Croatia in the semifinals on Tuesday.
What exactly happened? Lionel Messi found himself in deep waters after failing to control his temper. Following his team’s win over Netherlands in the penalty shootout, Messi heavily criticized match referee Antonio Mateu Lahoz. And therefore for this lashing out, FIFA opened disciplinary proceedings against him and the team.
Though FIFA is yet to officially declare its verdict on Messi, it is highly likely that the Argentine skipper will just walk away with a warning. There, however, still stands a possibility that the superstar can receive a match ban.
