MC Mary Kom Steps Down as India's Chef-de-Mission for Paris Olympics
Six-time world champion boxer MC Mary Kom has decided to step down from her role as India's chef-de-mission for the 2024 Paris Olympics due to personal reasons. Her decision was announced by the Indian Olympic Association (IOA). Kom expressed her regret at having to resign from the prestigious position, stating she was left with no choice but to withdraw.
Kom's appointment was initially announced by the IOA on March 21. The celebrated athlete, who won a bronze medal at the London Olympics in 2012, was set to oversee the nation's logistics for the Games scheduled for July 26 to August 11.
In a statement, IOA President PT Usha expressed sadness over Kom's resignation but respected her decision. Usha said she would soon announce a replacement for Kom and emphasized the need to respect the legendary boxer's privacy during this time.
Mary Kom's dedication to her country and support for the athletes competing in the Olympics remain unwavering, despite her decision to step down from this role.
