The onus of being the "strong" family member often takes its toll, leading to several mental health issues which men find difficult to cope with.
Almost 80% of men have to deal with some kind of mental issue at some point in their lives. It's essential that you support them through these tough times with patience, understanding and cooperation.
1 Depression - It causes feelings of sadness & loss of interest in activities he used to enjoy earlier. There may also be lack of hunger and he may find it difficult to sleep. Low energy & fatigue, difficulty concentrating and even thoughts of death & suicide are also symptoms. A combination of medication & psychotherapy can help, along with indulgence in positive activities such as exercise, proper sleep, healthy diet & avoidance of alcohol.
2 Burnout - Excessive & prolonged stress leads to burnout - a feeling of being overwhelmed, emotionally drained and unable to meet constant demands. The result is loss of interest & motivation, making a person cynical, hopeless and resentful. It also makes him more vulnerable to diseases such as cold & flu. The solution is to actively reduce stress, limit contact with negative people and help him reach out to loved ones to share feelings.
3 Anxiety disorder - It includes repeated feelings of intense, excessive and persistent worry & fear about everyday situations. Often, these may lead to panic attacks. It's essential to keep him involved in activities he enjoys and avoid any drugs & alcohol. Early treatment is always better - medications along with psychotherapy are effective cures.
