Kewpie is a Bengali restaurant that opened in 1989, initially as a 12 seater in the garage of a residential house. As its reputation grew it expanded to the entire downstairs of the house. It can now accommodate over 50 people in four dining areas.
Situated in quiet residential colony in Elgin Road, this family-run restaurant offers some of Calcutta’s most-loved dishes, cooked according to family recipes. Its primary appeal lies in its homely ambiance.
The main menu choice is of four different variation on thali, served on a banana leaf in earthenware pots; extra dishes, both vegetarian and otherwise, can be added for a small supplement. No alcohol is served, but there are assorted soft drinks.
The glasses or kulhad, the plate for salt chilly and Gandharaj lebu – the royal scented lemon which is unique to Bengal is all served in traditional earthenware. The plates come decorated with banana leaf.
