Ever since football has resumed after the COVID-19, all matches are being played under strict guidelines behind closed doors. Some fans are even flocking to stadium gates but to no avail.
The Euro 2020 was postponed last year due to the outbreak of the novel coronavirus. However, the tournament is set to kick off at Rome’s Stadio Olimpico on June 11 when the Italian giants host Turkey.
According to the president of the Italian Football Federation (FIGC), Gabriele Gravina, Italy will host the opening game of the European Championship as planned with a crowd in the stadium.
Italy is one of 12 host nations across Europe, and plans for the month-long tournament to go ahead as originally planned have been questioned as COVID-19 continues to spread. Some European countries like Spain had even imposed travel restrictions on flights coming from the UK ever since the new strain was found. Although many of these countries have lifted the ban, it will be interesting to see whether Italy’s hope to play the first Euro fixture with their fan’s chants and cheers will come to fruition.
