West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress supremo Mamata Banerjee’s emphatic victory over the BJP in the assembly elections has definitely enhanced her image nationally with her party insisting that she would be the prime architect in ousting Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his party from power in the 2024 Lok Sabha polls.
During her last visit to Delhi, Banerjee held a series of meetings with Opposition leaders, including Congress President Sonia Gandhi, her son Rahul Gandhi, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and DMK’s Kanimozhi.
She will also be attending a virtual meeting of Opposition Chief Ministers called by Sonia Gandhi on August 20.
That apart, the stupendous victory over the BJP has made the Trinamool Congress a favourite destination for some people, especially some of the Congress leaders disillusioned with their party.
The first to go was Abhijit Mukherjee, a former Congress MP and son of former President of India Pranab Mukherjee. Then came a surprise move by RTI activist and a well-known Congress sympathizer Saket Gokhale who joined the Trinamool Congress last week.
And on Monday, Mahila Congress President and former MP Sushmita Dev joined the Trinamool Congress. She had been visibly upset with the Congress leadership for some months now, especially over the Congress party’s decision to join hands with the AIUDF of Badruddin Ajmal in this year’s assembly elections in Assam.
Apart from disagreement with the state Congress leadership over the choice of poll candidates, Dev was also unhappy over the party’s stand on the CAA and the recent clashes between security forces of Mizoram and Assam.
Not only has the Trinamool Congress become an abode of the disillusioned Congress leaders but also for those who have taken a strong stand against Modi, be it former BJP leader and Union Minister Yashwant Sinha or Gokhale. The Trinamool Congress is also in talks with activist Akhil Gogoi in Assam.
Probably, some of these leaders do not see much hope in the Congress and its leadership given that it has been over two years now that the grand old party is functioning with an interim chief. This uncertainty has resulted in exodus across the country.
