After the lackluster performance against Morocco, Belgium's golden generation has come under strict scrutiny. One of their talisman, De Bruyne, stated: "Belgium has no chance of winning the World Cup because they are too old."
In this edition's World Cup, the Red Devils have been horrendous and were extremely lucky to get a result against the energetic Canadians. But the No. 1 ranked team in FIFA standings received a harsh reality check; in the hands of Morocco. Hence, Belgium stands third in Group F and is staring at the barrel of elimination.
Given the result against Morocco, the Red Devils cannot afford another slip-up against Croatia. In a tie, that might be the final nail in the coffin for the "Golden Genration." The Belgium team was named the "Golden Generation" because of the world-class talents that they produced in the last decade. Led by the ever-dependable Kompany, the red devil's arsenal had names like De Bruyne, Hazard, Lukaku, Coutouis, Vertonghen, and the list goes on. Belgium was a force to be reckoned with on the international stage.
The Red Devils peaked at the 2018 World Cup and were unfortunate to finish third. Belgium made history in 2018 and sent the mighty Brazilians packing. Their famous run ended in a heartbreaking defeat against the winner France- in the semi-finals. But that loss was also the beginning of the end of the Golden Generation. In the 2020 Euro Cup, the Red Devils' journey ended in the quarter-finals. It also meant that the Golden generation of Belgium would be left without trophy to cherish, their dominance, for over a decade.
Fast forward to 2022, the Golden generation has aged, and many have hung up their boots. The energy and enthusiasm of 2022 have diminished with time. As a result, the Red Devils are struggling massively in this world cup. With the game of football evolving every second, the Golden Generation of Belgium is stuck in the time loop. Although they have many young, exciting talents coming up, Belgium will never have a team like the Golden generation. And given their form in this WC, the match against Croatia could be the last dance.
