Indian authorities have uncovered a network of agents engaging in the illicit recruitment of individuals to fight for Russia in Ukraine, masquerading the scheme as employment opportunities. According to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), these agents utilized social media platforms to entice victims, with approximately 35 individuals falling prey to the scam across multiple states.
The revelation follows the tragic deaths of two Indians who were deceived into traveling to Russia and subsequently perished in the conflict. The CBI disclosed that traffickers operated within a well-organized network, exploiting social media channels like YouTube and local connections to attract unsuspecting youth with promises of lucrative employment opportunities in Russia.
Victims, unaware of the true nature of their recruitment, were trained for combat roles and deployed to frontline positions in the Russia-Ukraine war zone against their will, endangering their lives. The CBI has initiated legal proceedings against numerous private visa consultancy firms and agents, conducting raids in 13 locations and confiscating cash, documents, and electronic devices. India's Ministry of External Affairs has urged citizens to exercise caution and refrain from involvement in the conflict while collaborating with Russian authorities to facilitate the safe return of Indian nationals.
