India has vehemently criticized statements made by both the United States and Germany regarding the recent arrest of prominent opposition leader and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, just a month before the country's national elections.
India's Ministry of External Affairs rebuked the comments, asserting that the nation's legal processes adhere to an independent judiciary committed to fair and timely judgments. The ministry underscored the importance of diplomatic decorum, emphasizing that states, especially fellow democracies, should refrain from meddling in each other's internal affairs, as such actions could establish detrimental precedents.
Kejriwal's arrest on corruption charges by India's primary financial investigation agency prompted responses from international quarters. The US State Department urged a fair, transparent, and expeditious legal process for Kejriwal, while Germany's foreign office stressed the necessity of upholding principles of judicial independence and democratic norms.
In response to these remarks, India summoned the German embassy's deputy chief of mission and conveyed its strong protest, denouncing the statements as interference in the nation's judicial proceedings and a challenge to the judiciary's independence. Additionally, the acting US deputy chief of mission in New Delhi was also summoned in light of India's concerns.
