India has initiated the deportation of Myanmar refugees, marking the first step in a process to repatriate those who sought asylum following the military coup in 2021. The decision to end a visa-free border policy with Myanmar has prompted the deportation efforts, with thousands of refugees having fled to Indian states, particularly in regions sharing ethnic and familial ties with Myanmar.
Northeastern Manipur state, bordering Myanmar, has taken the lead in deportations, aiming to repatriate at least 77 refugees. The state has been grappling with sporadic violence stemming from ethnic clashes since May last year, resulting in nearly 200 casualties. The first batch of deportees arrived in the border town of Moreh and are expected to be transferred on Saturday.
The move has drawn international attention, with the U.S. State Department expressing concern over reports of deportations, urging neighboring countries to provide refuge and protection to those fleeing violence. Despite not being a signatory to the 1951 U.N. Refugee Convention, India asserts its actions are guided by humanitarian principles, emphasizing the systematic approach in providing shelter and aid to Myanmar refugees.
