How Xabi Alonso ended Leverkusen's century old pain
Xabi Alonso, in his one and half year in charge, managed what no one else had done before - win Bayer Leverkusen a Bundesliga title.
His side were utterly dominant and terrific to watch. While in possession, they were slick and moved smartly, off the ball, they were hard working and discipline.
Alonso build his side around the creative hub that is 20 year old Florian Wirtz, allowing the German to run games. He also gave the freedom to wingbacks Alejandro Grimaldo and Jeremie Frimpong to play to their strengths in attack, instead of forcing them to defend.
Not only that but being who he was as a player, he commands a respect that makes the players want to go to war for him. This is clearly visible in the amount of games that Leverkusen have won at the death.
Leverkusen are still unbeaten in all competitions this season, an extraordinary feat from an extraordinary team and an extraordinary manager.
