In a vibrant celebration marking India's 75th Republic Day, thousands gathered along New Delhi's ceremonial boulevard to witness a grand parade showcasing the nation's military prowess and cultural heritage. French President Emmanuel Macron served as the chief guest at the event, commemorating the adoption of India's Constitution on January 26, 1950, following independence from British colonial rule.
The parade featured a ceremonial British-era horse-drawn carriage, a symbolic return after four decades of its abandonment in favor of cars. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, adorned in a saffron-and-yellow turban, warmly greeted Macron at the viewing stand. The inclusion of foreign leaders at this annual spectacle continued a tradition, with Macron accepting the invitation on short notice after US President Joe Biden's absence.
The procession displayed an array of military assets, including tanks, missile systems, infantry combat vehicles, and medium-range surface-to-air missile systems. Noteworthy were the motorbike stunts, featuring over 250 women performers, adding a dynamic element to the celebration. Macron expressed gratitude, stating, "A great honor for France. Thank you, India." The event underscored the enduring diplomatic ties between the two nations and showcased India's cultural richness on the global stage.
