First episode. I don't want to ruin anything, but I've never seen a spin off television show set itself up better than this episode.
*Spoilers*
We begin in black and white.
Why?
Because this is the now, and despite being alive and having a job, etc, our protagonist doesn't feel alive. He feels like he's living on borrowed time. And he pines for who he was. He doesn't feel alive. So we are in black and white.
Once the flashback begins we are back in color. Because this is when Jimmy McGill feels alive, truly alive.
The most interesting aspect of Better Call Saul that I've noticed thus far is the way in which this show distances itself from Breaking Bad. At first glance we have the same style, some of the same characters, a story arc that feels similar.
But as the first and second episode advance we realize that this really isn't Breaking Bad.
Walter White, as much as we love/hate/love him, was NEVER a good guy. He dressed and acted as such. But even from the beginning of Breaking Bad there was an element of sociopathy in that character.
Contrast to Jimmy McGill, who genuinely wants to do good, which makes his story all the more tragic.
I would certainly recommend you give this a try. It is on par with Breaking Bad 🐐 and sometimes even better than Breaking Bad in my books.
