This article discusses the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar and the controversies that surrounds it. - On 2 December 2010, Qatar was chosen by the FIFA bid committee to host the 2022 World Cup, making it the first Arab state to ever do so. The prestigious tournament will be held in the summer of that year and will be the 22nd edition of the FIFA World Cup. Although granted this privilege, Qatari officials have been forced to deny corruption allegations since winning the bid. In 2018, a tour was conducted in order for Qatar to show that it could provide a suitable environment for this event. Despite these allegations and debates around hosting a summer tournament in one of the hottest countries in world, all preparations are on track for a successful world cup in 2022. The host nation has already built four stadiums with several more under construction including Lusail Stadium which is slated to host the final match.
Qatar will host eight stadiums for the FIFA 2022 World Cup, hosting 16 teams vying for the championship and becoming the first tournament to be held in the Middle East. The games will take place in Qatar's intense summer heat, making it a challenge for players and spectators alike. Qatar is the smallest nation to have ever been selected to host a FIFA World Cup, with a population of just over 2 million people. The next smallest nation was Uruguay who hosted in 1930 with a population of 1.7 million people.
FIFA 2022, however, is the biggest of them all with Qatar boasting the title of the most watched sporting event in the world. Even though Qatar has been condemned by many international organizations for their use of 1.6 million migrant workers in sectors like construction and real estate to build stadiums and infrastructure ahead of the tournament, they have also anticipated that this will leave a legacy that can benefit Qatar and beyond. The World Cup is projected to create thousands of new jobs across key sectors such as hospitality, estate planning and tourism.
