Einstein and the Bomb, I think, is a poor attempt by Netflix to piggyback on the popularity of Oppenheimer
Einstein in Einstein and the Bomb is mentally disturbed. Sad and lonely, and flees from place to place. Nazi Germany is not favoring this genius, born a Jew raises his concerns against the nuclear bomb, an invention Hitler was keen on. Einstein’s famous equation E=mc² started it all. That was the base of a destructive mass-energy conversion. Einstein’s successors in science followed his theory and made the atomic bomb. This short docudrama on Netflix is in hybrid mode. Using real footage and the voice of Albert Einstein, it enacts the present situation of the scientist when he comes to the UK as a refugee, He didn’t have an address to put in the register. Here, in an isolated estate, he shares his childhood curiosities in science with two girls posted with guns to guard him. These scenes are based on a b&w picture from history.
Director Anthony Philipson is ensuring us the Nobel laureate Einstein wasn’t a member of the Manhattan Project led by Oppenheimer. In Oppenheimer, Einstein is shown as a crazy genius crossing paths with Oppenheimer and discussing the implications of the nuclear bomb without mentioning time or place. Christopher Nolan explains his film Oppenheimer focused on the Manhattan Project only. I got a clear understanding of the background of the Manhattan Project after watching Einstein and the Bomb. The script is full of Einstein’s monologues. And the supporting footages show Hitler’s Germany and the time of WWII. Aidan McArdle plays Albert Einstein’s moral struggles and his wish for the world to be at peace. Aidan resembles Einstein though I felt some discord with the real Einstein.
Einstein never believed a nuclear bomb could wipe out mankind. He was so confused- I made one great mistake in my life - when I signed the letter to President Roosevelt recommending that atomic bombs be made- When a Japanese journalist came and questioned him on the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, his remorse was evident. I still couldn’t figure out how Einstein wanted the world to use E=mc².
What would have been the outcome of the Manhattan Project if the US had given security clearance to Einstein in 1940?
