Does Dembele deserve the 'Figo' treatment?
In arguably the most controversial transfer of all time, Luis Figo had moved from Barcelona to Real Madrid in 2000. When he played in the Camp Nou for the first time for Real, he was subjected to multiple objects being thrown at him, including a pig's head. A question which has been mooted before Barcelona's game against PSG today is whether Ousmane Dembele deserves the same treatment.
Dembele was signed for huge money as a youngster and spent most of his time in Spain injured or inconsistent. The club wanted him gone but Xavi recognised his talents, fought against the club and restored him to the player he was meant to be. So when next season he left for PSG for a cut price, the fans didn't take it very well.
But still, he doesn't deserve the 'Figo treatment '. Truthfully, he doesn't deserve the importance that it warrants. Figo was Barca's captain and the best player in the world and he left to join their biggest rivals. Dembele is or was nowhere near that and his importance at the club has been largely replaced by a 16 year old Lamine Yamal in his first senior season. So while the booing and intimidation must persist, Dembele just isn't important enough to warrant the Figo treatment from Barca fans.
