Kamala Das was a renowned author, the mother of Indian English modern poetry, the face of feminist writers in post-colonial India, and a feisty woman whose legacy lives on!
Throughout her life, she consistently shocked and surprised readers, whether it was through her beautiful, bold, and unapologetic works or her own personal transformations.
Her writings in both English and Malayalam literature continue to be appreciated in India. Her works primarily covered a broad range of subjects, including politics, women's issues, child care, gender roles, and sexuality.
She depicted her multicultural upbringing mixed with outstanding writing skills. Every ardent Keralite who is drawn to their roots will shed tears of delight listening to her narration, since it was so exceptional and moving.
Moreover, the way Kamala dealt with female sexuality was brave and unique in India, making her a significant iconoclast figure. Her remarks spoke loudly about the unspeakable sufferings of women.
Her writings attempted to highlight women's inner feelings, fantasies, and dreams, as well as to demonstrate that women are more than just commodities of pleasure. Kamala was unconcerned with the cultural reactions that would be directed at her as a writer and a woman.
She was unaffected by guilt, and she was unapologetic about her works, which makes her one of my favourites feminist writers!
