Devdutt Padikkal has been traded off by Rajasthan Royals to the Lucknow Supergiants for right arm pacer Avesh Khan. While the trade seems fair prima facie, we're compelled to wonder if Rajasthan Royals missed a trick by releasing the southpaw.

Devdutt Padikkal made his IPL debut in 2020 for the Royal Challengers Bangalore. In his debut IPL season, the stylish southpaw amassed 473 runs with 5 fifties. He bettered himself in terms of the his average the next season, amassing 328 runs in 14 games including a century.

Padikkal was acquired by Rajasthan Royals in the Mega Auction of 2022. Though he couldn't replicate his "RCB-esque" performances for Rajasthan, he had a 376 runs season in 2022. 2023 was an average season for the batter, with him managing 261 runs in 11 innings.

Inspite of two average seasons, it is undeniable that Devdutt Padikkal is an extremely resilient batter. He's shown over the years that he can perform in different positions. Rajasthan Royals' decision to release the batter might mean that they missed out on a jackpot and a great future prospect.
