Bold, ambitious and creative, 'Atlanta' transcends traditional notions of television genre. Whilst consistently funny and consistently dramatic, the tone of the show, particularly in the latter half of the second season, shifts from episode to episode. But somehow it works. "Atlanta' is everything The Chi' tries so hard (and fails miserably) to be, playing like a serialised 'Spike Lee Joint'.
Donald Glover has managed to create one of the most courageous, funny, compelling and just straight up entertaining television shows in recent years. In a time when so many platforms and so many creators are vying for attention, striving to be heard amid a tumult of mediocre content, 'Atlanta' seems to somehow stand apart in terms of quality and originality, while never seeming to try too hard.
I think it's mainly down to the incredible quality of writing that elevates 'Atlanta' to the top on the pack. Rarely does a comedic drama come along that feels so effortless yet uncompromising. Outstanding,
