Halfway through, I took a lavish break from Ae Watan Mere Watan and tried to sleep. Couldn’t. Here comes Curly Tales Kamia with Smriti Irani. Quite a long interview. Smriti’s explicit info on the desi menu garnished with bittersweet chapters of her life! Very engaging and feverish. It’s easily 1 am! Why these backstories?! I have nothing exciting to write about Ae Watan Mere Watan. The chap I loved was Emraan Hashmi. Missed him during his break. In looks, talks, and acting out Ram Manohar Lohia, Emraan definitely makes an impact. Ae Watan Mere Watan takes three youngsters in the lead who dedicate themselves to India’s freedom fight. One among them, Fahad (Sparsh Srivastav) goes skin-deep in his character. I heard he did a good job in KiranRao’s Laapataa Ladies. Yet to watch. Kaushik (Abhay Verma) is cute.
So, it must be an experimental role for Sara Ali Khan. I would never say she didn’t try. A lazy script cut her wings when she aspired to fly like a Siberian crane in the film. Not hiding it, she has limitations. Her character is loosely based on Usha Mehta an unsung hero in the history of the Indian Freedom struggle. Usha’s father was a barrister (Sachin Khedekar) who worked for the British. Since childhood, Usha has been a true patriot and follows the Gandhian way of life. History marks her rebellion as an underground radio operator to unite India at the peak of the Quit India Movement. Of course, the content had potential. But the film moves from one scene to another with no impact or surprises. Director Kannan Iyer leaves a rosy impression of girls leaving home to take part in the freedom struggle. Anyways, Triangulation technology to trace Congress Radio is detailed enough! British personnel in Ae Watan Mere Watan is funny. The film’s visual settings are good.
Bringing freshness to narratives from the pre-independence era is a herculean task. The tale and actors should have the same fervor to hook the audience. Sara’s Usha was too prosaic to create an effect. Even Gandhi's speech failed.
Yeah..Smriti Irani’s was a better show.
