Kuttey is from a young, debutant director Aasmaan Bhardwaj, son of Vishal Bharadwaj. I wrote this first, as that’s how I excused myself for watching this dark world of dark cops. When I saw Arjun Kapoor’s (Cop Gopal) first scene where you don’t get to see him often, I was happy. Another Bollywood chap is coming out! Then I see a favorite star Kumud Mishra in a good cop (shifts later) role supporting Naxalite Laxmi in police custody. If you have missed Konkona Sen Sharma on screen for a long, Kuttey brings her back. I would rather say, her shadow in a rotten wardrobe.
The narrative of Kutte is unfolding in four parts. An epilogue, Sabka Maalik Ek, Aata Kya Canada and Moong Ki Daal. It was all okay. Totally money-minded, dark-shaded cops rule an area. Nobody trusts each other. All play dirty games refurbishing the crime motives beneficial for their pockets. No ethics. No commitments. They are happily protecting rich politicians and other criminals. Guns..goons..bloodshed.
The script written by the father-son duo is overstuffed. It takes divided routes to reach the final destination. There is a try for character build-up. My pick was Tabu -Pammi. Her body language and dialogues were impressive initially but in the second half, she turns so weak similar to the plot, I really felt bad for her.
The ATM money carrier security Ashish Vidyarthi shares limited screen time in Kuttey making me sad again. None of his recent roles squeeze his talent. I don’t know if I missed something. Another veteran Naseeruddin Shah – why did he even accept this role? Khobre could have been anybody. The same goes for Radhika Madan. Except used for a hot love-making scene in a car, what’s her role? The unsettled daughter of a rich Baap craving for a simple life with their driver?!
At the start, I thought Kuttey has got some stuff. When it developed through its childish twists and turns also I clung to the talented actors’ edge. But, everything collapsed everywhere all at once.
