CHAPTER 5
STUDYING LAW CONTINUES...
To this Bakshi Ji gave the reply that he would write to the Principal, Babu Golak Nath Chatterjee—Golak Babu as he was popularly called—who would admit me. All my arguments having failed, Bakshi Ji advised me to go to the Law College next morning with his letter and let him know the result. I slept over the matter till the next morning. I didn’t want to disclose this sudden turn in my career to my professors Jones and Ruchi Ram who I thought would disapprove. However, I was not a rebellious young man, and the next morning I went to the Law College that was then being held on the second floor of Bharat Buildings on Nisbet Road. All the time I hoped that the Principal would refuse to admit me especially as it was impossible for me to make up the number of lectures required to be put in, before I could take the first Law examination to be held in June 1911. I delivered the letter to the Principal who sent me to the head clerk, an old but amusing Bengalee gentleman. He told me to fill in the admission application. After doing that I returned to the Principal who told me that I would be admitted to the Law College as soon as I had paid the fees. I said, “Sir, what about my lectures?” Pat came the reply, that he would see to it that they were made up. As I was coming out of the Principal’s room, Professor Ruchi Ram walked in to see Babu Golak Nath. He asked me why I was wasting my time in the Law College instead of attending to my work in the chemistry laboratory. Before I could put in a word, Babu Golak Nath told him the content of Bakshi Ji’s letter and of my admission to the Law College. I was now told to go and prepare for the First Examination in Law class.
