Mehr Chand Mahajan - an introduction...
Judge of the Supreme Court
On 1st October, 1948 Mr. Mahajan took the oath of office as a Judge of the Federal Court which gave place to the Supreme Court when the Constitution of India came into force on 26th January, 1950. As Judge of Federal Court of India, he decided all cases pending before privy council in Hyderabad State under Nizam rule which was a landmark achievement.
Chief Justice of India
Mr. Mahajan took over as Chief Justice of India on 4th January, 1954. He took a bench of Supreme Court to Kashmir to decide all case of state privy council transfered to it by Govt. of India.
President of DAV Institutions - 1955-1964
After his retirement, DAV Managing Trust approached him to involve himself in it’s affairs. Mr. Mahajan had earlier been associated with the DAV College Trust and Managing Committee. He was their President from 1936 to 1939 and again on retirement as Chief Justice of India.
