12th March, 2006: The Greatest Run Chase in ODI History
On this very day in the year 2006, South Africa chases down a seemingly impossible target of 435 runs against the mighty Australia. The run chase continues to be the highest run chase ever achieved in the history of One Day International cricket.
Australia batted first and half centuries from Adam Gilchrist, Simon Katich and Michael Hussey align with captain Ricky Ponting's Century propelled them to the score of 434/4.
In reply, South Africa lost Boeta Dippenaar early, but Herschelle Gibbs and Graeme Smith helped them stabilize the innings. Gibbs' innings of 175 runs proved to be the game defining knock. Mark Boucher and J van der Wath played handy cameos. South Africa ended up chasing down the total with one ball to spare.
This continues to be the greatest run chase in the history of ODI cricket.
