Former Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh on Tuesday resigned from the Congress and formed a new political party ahead of the state assembly elections scheduled for February-March next year.
In his seven-page resignation letter, Captain Amarinder Singh was very critical of Congress President Sonia Gandhi, her son Rahul Gandhi and daughter Priyanka Gandhi.
He also made a scathing attack on Punjab Congress President Navjot Singh Sidhu, calling him an unstable individual and an acolyte of the Pakistani deep state.
His Punjab Lok Congress is expected to have a tie-up with the BJP and breakaway factions of the Shiromani Akali Dal.
It was expected of Captain Amarinder Singh to write a stinging resignation letter given that he felt hurt and humiliated over the manner he was removed as the Chief Minister.
Captain Amarinder Singh's proposed move to ally with the BJP is not without reasons.
Firstly, he is hoping that the Modi government withdraws the three farm laws that have triggered widespread protests by farmers camping along various Delhi borders.
Since BJP is facing a backlash in Punjab over the new laws with one of its oldest allies, the Shiromani Akali Dal, dumping the saffron party.
Secondly, an alliance with Captain Amarinder Singh will give an opportunity to the BJP to regain some lost ground.
Thirdly, his son Raninder Singh is facing an Enforcement Directorate (ED) investigation in an alleged case of Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA) violation and he would expect the central government go soft in the case in view of his tie-up.
But will his party hurt the Congress or be a damp squib as had happened with him in the past when he quit the grand old party and later the Akali Dal to form his own outfit but failed to make any mark.
His successor Charanjit Singh Channi is certainly giving a tough time to his opponents and detractors within the Congress, including Sidhu who leaves no chance to criticise and berate him.
Now, it would be interesting to see who all from the Congress join Captain Amarinder Singh given that some leaders, including a few Members of Parliament, are considered close to him.
