Richarlison was signed by Tottenham Hotspur for £50 million in the summer as the club was looking to strengthen their side after qualifying for the Champions League. Richarlison joined Everton in 2018 and scored over 40 league goals for the Merseyside club. He was Everton’s main man and became a fan favourite at the club. This was seen as a good move for the player as Everton just managed to stay up last season after a tough relegation fight. The Brazilian proved he was hugely talented and it was time for him to move to a club where he could play in Europe and also try to achieve silverware. While Tottenham is not a club you associate with silverware many felt that under Antonio Conte this will change therefore the move made great sense for both the player and the club.
Richarlison can operate in all three positions in the front line. He is left-footed but has shown he has the quality of being two-footed which makes him a fantastic player. He possesses the strength and pace to also lead the line as a number nine. The Brazilian is also extremely effective when playing on the counter-attack and under Conte, Spurs played fantastic counter-attacking football last season. Harry Kane, Heuing Ming Son and Dejan Kulusevski were the mainstays in Conte’s attack last season however Richarlison was expected to challenge them and provide competition.
However, this has not been proven to be the case and Richarlison has struggled to start consistently for Spurs. His appearances off the bench have also been extremely limited and he has therefore been underwhelming. Spurs are struggling and are currently outside the top four so it is surprising that Conte has not shuffled his attack. The manager can be criticised for this however some criticism should also be labelled at the player as he has failed to put in impactful performances, granted he has been given limited opportunities. He has only managed to score two goals this season and both of them came in the Champions League in the same match.
