There have been almost 3.5 lakh cases in a day, the highest yet. There has also been a hike in the number of deaths per day. Ganga Ram hospital from Delhi had a lot of deaths due to shortage of oxygen and this is now a major concern in the country.
Currently, India produces 7000 metric tonnes of oxygen per day whereas the per day requirement is only around 5000 metric tonnes. Then why are we facing such a shortage of oxygen?
The answer is the uneven distribution of oxygen. The producing places are far awar from the places having the demand and transportation takes a lot of time ehich is leading to shortage of oxygen.
Moreover the amount of oxygen carrying cylinders is lower than the required leading to problem of transportation. The government has recently allowed suppliers to use nitrogen and argon tanks to carry oxygen and this would help in oxygen deficiency. The government's decision to import 50,000 metric tonnes of oxygen would also help in fulfilling the oxygen shortage in some states.
